Silty Sand Deposit of Ganga River with Random Fiber Reinforcement for Filling Low Lying Area

A river mainly consists of two distinct parts—the upper course and the lower course. In the upper course, the heavier materials are deposited and the high current disrupts the surface sediments. These are then transported downstream after being disintegrated. In the lower course, the current becomes slow leading to deposition of lighter material. In the present study, the bed material of River Ganga at Majher Char, Kalyani, has been considered, which seems to be in the lower course, and at this place, deposition of fine silty sand has been found. This material has been collected to utilize it with fiber reinforcement for filling low-lying area. Nylon fiber is used as reinforcing material with fiber content of 0, 0.3, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0% for fiber length 10 mm. Relative density test and direct shear test have been done on unreinforced and reinforced material with different contents of fiber. It has been found that with increase of fiber content, its shear strength is increased with appreciable increase of cohesion and slight reduction of angle of shearing resistance. Hence, the results have been used to find bearing capacity of footings by modeling in PLAXIS 3D, considering variation of depth of filling in a filled up low-lying area. The increase of allowable bearing capacity for 50 mm settlement, with use of collected sand and fiber reinforcement, appears to be quite appreciable for its use in filling a low-lying area. The paper emphasizes on determination of properties of fiber-reinforced sandy riverbed deposit and its use as a fill material with fiber reinforcement.
