Pleural Effusions in Diseases of Specific Organ Systems

Pleural effusions may be associated with disease of several extrapulmonary organs. This chapter discusses the differential diagnosis of pleural effusions in diseases of the cardiovascular system, liver, pancreas and kidney. It explores the reasons for pleural fluid formation in these conditions and discusses the scope and utility of investigations directed at their evaluation. Pleural effusions in various aspects of HIV disease are also discussed.
