Percussion is an important part of the physical examination of the chest. All vibrating structures create compression waves when percussed. In respect of the chest, the frequency of the sound generated on percussion can be made use of to perceive the state of underlying anatomical structures. This chapter deals with the physics related to percussion, the various methods of percussion, the different percussion notes, and above all, their diagnostic relevance.
