Cyanosis is the term given to a bluish purple discoloration of the tissues resulting from an increased concentration of deoxygenated hemoglobin in the capillary bed. The approach to cyanosis has similarities with that of hypoxemic respiratory failure. In this chapter, the specific concepts that determine the approach to cyanosis are discussed. Respiratory failure has been discussed separately (see Chap. 26 ).
