Evaluation of Liquefaction Potential of Old Tailing Dam Using SPT Data

A tailings dam is typically an earth-fill embankment dam used to store by-products of mining operations after separating the ore from the gangue. Several mining projects are evaluating the use of existing tailings facilities for the disposal of fresh tailings due to a trend of reducing new areas impacted by mining activities. This paper presents the results of a geotechnical site investigation in one of the old tailings storage facilities (copper tailings) located in the North Central part of India, the height of which is to be raised to accommodate more tailings and to evaluate the liquefaction susceptibility of the same old tailings storage. It is planned to raise the height tailing dam by about 7.0 m, which will serve the purpose of storage of tailing for about 12 years. Liquefaction is a phenomenon in which the strength and stiffness of loose saturated coarse-grained soil are reduced by earthquake shaking or other dynamic loading. Evaluation of soil or tailings liquefaction resistance is an important aspect of mining and geotechnical engineering practice. The evaluation procedure widely used is termed the simplified procedure, which was originally developed by Seed and Idriss (1971) using blow counts from standard penetration test (SPT) correlated with the parameter indicating the seismic loading on the soil called cyclic stress ratio. In the present study, the author highlighted the following objective: I. Geotechnical investigations (borrow area) are carried out at 6 locations for characterization of tailing. II. Carrying out the standard penetration tests (SPT) conducted at 1.5 m intervals as per the IS 2131:1981 in 03 Borehole locations. III. Determination of liquefaction capability of the tailing dam (factor of safety) based on SPT-N Value.
