In this study, illustration of geotechnical investigation of NEOM Company’s Cube Mountain project located in the Gulf of Aqaba (GoA) is presented utilizing information from open-source data, geological maps, published papers and satellite imagery. The investigation is divided into four sections—borehole log, geophysical survey works, PSHA and laboratory tests. A horizontal rotary cored borehole (BHHz4) was drilled and Optical Borehole Imager (OBI) televiewer technology was used for assessing in situ conditions, observations of which revealed diverse geological features at varying depths. Geophysical survey was examined over a 40 km coastline section using MASW and SR techniques where lines MASW-ST1-34 and MASW-ST-36, each 150 m long, were found to be near the Cube project area. Observations suggested that both MASW lines were granular Wadi deposits and marked as Site Class C while Site Class B was considered to be within the Cube project area. PSHA study was performed using PGA and SA at natural periods of 4 s to 0.05 s considering return periods of 1 in 72, 2475 and 4975 years. PGA ranges were ‘from 0.095g to 0.49g’ and ‘from 0.11g to 0.53g’ for 72 years and 4975 years return periods, respectively, and expected PGA for 2475 years return period was approximately 0.45g. A set of laboratory tests were performed for conducting the mechanical characteristics of retrieved samples of soil and rocks for calculation of net bearing pressure, modulus of subgrade reaction of shallow foundation and allowable bearing capacity of bored piles.
