Lateral Performance of Screw Pile Foundation for Offshore Jacket Structure and Effect of Pile Stiffness

Screw piles are typically made of steel and consist of a central shaft welded with one or more helices that are useful to screw the pile into the ground. These are generally used onshore as a guyed cable anchor to support the electric and transmission towers. Recently, screw piles are gaining popularity as a foundation for offshore jacket structures which are subjected to a significant amount of lateral loads. This paper presents the experimental results from the 1-g laboratory tests carried out on 1:20 scaled screw piles subjected to lateral loading in cohesionless soil having 75% relative density. The effect of the stiffness of the pile is studied by considering screw piles fabricated with steel and acrylic material. It is observed that the steel screw pile exhibits a notable difference in load capacity when compared to the acrylic screw pile. This shows that for the pile under lateral loading, it is crucial to take the pile stiffness into account in addition to the soil stiffness. Lateral tests are also conducted on a plain shaft pile to compare its performance with that of the screw piles. The results suggest that the helical piles are feasible foundation options for the offshore jacket structures under lateral load loading.
