Improving Equivalent Top Load Curve Obtained Using Current Methods from Bi-directional Pile Load Test Data After Comparing with Top Load Test Results

Load testing of pile foundations being mandatory, most of the conventional methods of load testing are becoming uneconomical and also the risks associated have increased for testing such large capacity piles. Bi-directional static load test (BDSLT) method can test high-capacity piles with lower risk than other methods. To know response of pile when loaded from top an equivalent top load (ETL) curve is constructed. There are a number of limitations of current methods. The soil response is assumed to be independent of the direction of loading of the soil which results in inaccurate estimation of the ETL curves. Instrumentation using good number of strain gauges is important to improve the parameters which are used in current methods. These parameters used in the methods to develop ETL curve needs to be studied in order to get accurate ETL curve. In most of the literature, BDSLT is compared with TLT which involves reaction system and gives different response when pile is loaded from top without reaction system. After a detailed study of these methods, a case study from Italy is considered and finite element modelling using Plaxis 3D is carried out for a case study in Italy for BDSLT as well as top load test (TLT) and ETL curves are compared with top-down load settlement curves from TLT and conclusions are made after analysis.
