Evaluation of Bearing Capacity by Teng’s Shear Failure and Settlement Criterion
摘要
Bearing capacity of soil is often estimated from SPT-N as SPT is commonly used in geotechnical investigations. In this paper, four methods of estimation of bearing capacity of square footing in cohesionless soil have been used for detailed parametric study. IS-6403-1981 method, Teng’s method based on shear failure criterion and IS8009-1976 method and Teng’s method based on settlement criterion have been used in this study. The study involved square footing of size 1 m, 1.5 m, 2 m, 3 m and 4 m at depth of 1 m, 1.5 m and 2.0 m considering submergence condition. SPT (N-value) is used in the range of 5–40 with overburden and dilatancy corrections and also considering energy loss correction. The study finds that the Teng’s method (shear failure Criterion) gives the lowest Bearing Capacity of the soil among all the four methods. However, when at depth d = 2.0 m, and N > 15, IS 8009 method gives the lowest value of Bearing capacity. Plaxis 3D gives relatively higher Safe Bearing Capacity of 203 kPa for the case of 2 m size square footing with SPT-N = 20 compared to IS 8009 and Teng’s methods.
