Study of Surface Settlement and Stability Due to Integrated Open Excavation and Mined Tunnel with Varying Factors

Due to limited land availability, the design and construction of the station box necessitate the utilization of multiple construction techniques such as cut & cover and the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM). The sequential integration of these methods, starting with cut & cover excavation followed by NATM tunneling, induces a combined effect on ground movements and settlements of adjacent structures. This paper focuses on analyzing the ground response (Surface settlement) and stability of the excavation system (i.e., Global factor of safety (SRF in FEM analysis) to such integrated excavation and impact of different overburden, geological strata & rock pillars on Surface settlement and SRF by several FEM analyses. The key findings of the paper state that Surface settlement and Global factor of safety (SRF) are governed mainly by geological strata and to a certain extent by rock pillars. If the rock pillar increases to an extent, its impact on ground settlement due to the integrated excavation of NATM tunnel and cut & cover is insignificant.
