Enhancing the Shear Strength Parameters in Soft Clayey Soil Considering Recycled Jute Geotextile

In geotechnical engineering, soil plays a key role in supporting the structure and ensuring their stability. However, weak soil with low shear strength parameters may fail to withstand structural loads; in such cases soil improvement techniques become necessary. Utilizing natural fibers, such as jute, as a soil stabilizer may enhance shear strength parameters of soft clayey soil and present advantages due to their widespread availability, cost-effectiveness, and environmental benefits. This paper primarily focuses on utilizing the jute sheets, typically considered as waste material, through a layered soil reinforcement technique to improve the shear strength parameters of poor-quality soil. The unconsolidated undrained triaxial tests (UU) are conducted to determine the soil shear strength. Soil specimens are prepared with the addition of jute sheet layer at different depths to assess their impact on soil improvement. The sample behavior is examined for three cases and based on the experimental results, it is determined that the cohesion value increases up to 40% to 60% with the addition of the soil reinforcement layers, and an optimum position of jute material is obtained. It is concluded from the test results that the use of jute sheets can be considered as a reinforcement material for soil. The experiments clearly indicate the positive impact of jute sheets on soil behavior to enhance the shear strength. Therefore, it is recommended to employ jute sheets as a soil stabilizer in low-quality soil to improve its shear strength.
