The significant rise in construction and demolition waste (CDW) underscores the necessity of identifying suitable methods for its disposal or reutilization. Various articles in technical literature have indicated that CDW can be effectively repurposed in geotechnical applications such as pavements and earth retaining structures. Given the highly heterogeneous nature of CDW, it is imperative to characterize the material before its utilization in such applications. Understanding the composition of the material, including the type and proportion of constituents, is crucial, as it primarily hinges on the source of its generation. This study focuses on the gradation characteristics of CDW collected from different sites across Kollam District, Kerala. The district is categorized into three regions for the study: urban area (U), rural area (R), and semi-urban area (S). A comparative examination of CDW constituents of the collected samples is conducted based on geographical area and source of generation. Further, gradation characteristics of the CDW samples collected from different sites were determined. It was observed that CDW from urban area contains higher percentage of finer particles (less than 4.75 mm) compared to rural and semi-urban area. It was attributed to the increased presence of brick and soil content in CDW collected from urban area. This increased percentage of fines in CDW can significantly affect the geotechnical properties of the CDW samples. Thus, the suitability of CDW collected from the regions can be recommended in geotechnical applications based on its source of collection.
