Reinforced Earth® Wall Technology for Supporting Heavy Loads—Case Studies in India

Reinforced Earth® structures play a crucial role in civil engineering, especially when supporting heavy loads. The fundamental principle behind reinforced soil is that an introduced material provides a tensile restraining force that reduces the lateral stress required to maintain the equilibrium of a loaded soil. While reinforced earth retaining structures have been widely adopted in various civil engineering applications, their potential in the mining industry remains relatively unexplored. Traditional uses include dump walls, crusher walls, and tailing dams. However, as the mining industry faces increasing demands for higher capacities, greater heights, and dynamic load conditions, reinforced earth offers a compelling solution. In this paper, an attempt has been made to discuss a specific case, where Reinforced Earth® wall was built with flexible fascia to support heavy loads like loads from building foundations, and process plant buildings. The paper address to describe the design challenges, specific measures adopted in designs and construction challenges.
