The road network being the most important socio-economic driver of any nation, its functional and serviceability requirements are to be ensured through appropriate technical and maintenance strategies. The major deficiencies in the pavement systems arise due to the inevitable deviation of specifications in the view of paucity for good construction materials and economic constraints, especially for low-volume roads. With the inevitable use of local and other marginal materials, through strength criterion is being addressed by using suitable stabilization methods, the low permeability of these materials poses serious internal drainage problems. In order to overcome these problems, geosynthetics have been introduced in pavement construction for the past few decades especially for separation in case of cohesive soil subgrades. Currently, several investigators have been working on the effectiveness of geosynthetic drainage systems within the pavement layers. This paper presents a brief overview on the importance of subbase course, pavement internal drainage, and highlights the role of geotextiles in enhancing the efficiency and extending the service life of low-volume roads.
