In contemporary civil engineering, geosynthetic materials are widely used due to their advantageous properties across various construction projects. These materials find their most significant applications in geotechnical engineering, primarily for enhancing soil characteristics. The key functions of geosynthetics include reinforcement, separation, filtration, drainage, barrier protection, and surface erosion control. This paper specifically examines the application of Geocell and Geogrid for surface erosion control on railway embankments within the Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India (DFCCIL), focusing on a segment of the Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor (EDFC) near Muzaffarnagar, Uttar Pradesh. This project seeks a modern, cost-efficient, and environmentally sustainable method to protect embankment slopes from erosion caused by rainfall and wind. Traditional methods, such as stone pitching, concrete lining, and vegetation alone, have proven insufficient. This paper briefs the innovative use of Geogrid and Geocell combined with vegetative soil as an effective alternative for erosion control and slope stabilization. The paper also emphasizes on the construction aspects of two options and their long-term performance to meet the desired objectives.
