Characterization of Contaminated Soil and Groundwater Due to Landfill Leachate

Landfills are the most prevalent waste disposal sites globally due to their cost-effectiveness. This study focuses on the Bhalswa dumpsite in Delhi, operational since 1992, which lacks scientific lining material, allowing continuous wastewater injection. The research involves a physicochemical analysis of soil, groundwater, and leachate samples from around the Bhalswa Landfill near Rohini, Delhi. Parameters examined include TDS, chloride content, TH, alkalinity, pH, calcium, and magnesium levels, along with sulfate, nitrate, and phosphate content in centrifuged soil samples. The study encompasses 10 soil samples, 10 groundwater samples, and 5 leachate samples collected from the Bhalswa dumpsite to the DTU campus, Rohini. Some soil samples exhibited a pH range of 8.0–8.4, indicating alkalinity. These results are compared with uncontaminated soil samples from the university area to assess longitudinal variations in physiochemical parameters and to benchmark against standard soil chemical content ranges. The findings show changes in soil behavior, and groundwater results are compared with the BIS drinking water standards, revealing significant pollution and unsafe conditions for drinking and household use near the Bhalswa landfill due to high levels of chemical contaminants.
