Investigation of the Soil-Like Fine Fraction from Roorkee’s Open Dumpsite: A Thorough Examination of Extracted Legacy Waste

The proliferation of open dumpsites and landfills presents a significant challenge for waste management in developing countries like India. Landfill mining, also known as biomining, offers a promising solution to address this mounting waste issue. However, the soil-like fine fraction extracted from biomining poses a major obstacle due to its abundance and problematic properties. Often, these fine fractions are simply reintroduced into the landfill, greatly compromising mining efficiency. This study focuses on characterizing the physicochemical and geotechnical aspects of the soil-like fine fraction extracted from the Saliyar open dumpsite in Roorkee. The findings reveal that the fine fraction can be classified as a non-hazardous soil-like material with very low levels of total and leachable heavy metals. Geotechnical analysis identifies the fine fraction as poorly graded fine sand with low specific gravity, low permeability (2.46 × 10–7 m/sec), medium to low compressibility (coefficient of compression 0.09), and high CBR value (unsoaked 17.73%; soaked 14.77%), along with exceptionally high shear strength. Surface morphological examination indicates the presence of needle-shaped fibers in the fine fraction, contributing to enhanced shear strength and load-penetration characteristics, resembling naturally occurring fiber-reinforced soil. This study serves as an initial step toward considering the bulk reuse of this soil-like fraction from biomining in various geotechnical applications.
