This paper highlights the analysis and design of a vertical cut-off wall designed for the waste disposal site at Brahmapuram, Ernakulam district, Kerala, India. Improper disposal of the municipal solid waste had created pollution on the geoenvironment at the site and the Kadambrayar river located nearby the waste disposal site. Geotechnical and environmental studies were conducted to assess the gravity of the situation, and it was found that there was a serious concern about the pollution of the river and surrounding geoenvironment. Thus, as a remedial measure to bring about a practical solution to the issue, a vertical cut-off liner system was considered for the waste treatment plant to attenuate the transport of heavy metals and leachate to the groundwater and the surrounding river as it served to be a habitat for many aquatic living organisms and a source of water for the domestic use of people residing nearby. Studies were carried out in different stages, including the analysis of water samples, soils, and the pollutant transport behavior and the design of vertical waste containment facility for the solid waste treatment plant. Materials used for this study were local alluvial soil and Kuttanadu clay. Wastewater and leachate samples were collected from three different locations surrounding the site. These materials were characterized in the geotechnical and environmental engineering laboratories at Rajagiri School of Engineering and Technology, Ernakulam, Kerala, India. Computer Modelling was performed using GeoStudio®. It is thought that such a study would be helpful in the design of a municipal solid waste disposal facility.
