Effect of Fiber Reinforcement on Tensile Strength of Soil

The behavior of soil in tension plays a significant role in the designing of a geo-system, where tensile cracks contribute to progressive erosion and landslides in slopes, dams, road embankments, retaining walls, and other earth structures. By introducing sediments and pollutants into water bodies, disturbing ecosystems, and reducing the quality of soil and water, erosion further promotes the process of geo-environmental pollution. The geotechnical infrastructures are severely affected as soil with cracks is more compressible and has much higher hydraulic conductivity making it important to study the tensile strength characteristics of the soil. The main purpose of this paper is to analyze the effectiveness of natural fibers on the tensile strength of soil by conducting direct tensile tests on the soil at different fiber types (natural), fiber content, and soil moisture content. The experiment was carried out using a fractional factorial design. Furthermore, statistical analysis was done to get factor contribution and the optimal level for the best output. It was observed from the results of tensile tests that with the inclusion of fiber both peak tensile strength as well as residual strength increased. The results showed that fiber content is the most contributing factor to enhancing the tensile strength of the soil .
