Landslides are a recurring threat in the mountainous regions of the Himalayas, with the Chamoli district in Uttarakhand, India, particularly susceptible due to the presence of the Main Central Thrust (MCT) and other geological discontinuities. Also, this region belongs to Zone V, which is vulnerable to earthquakes. This study aims to assess and map landslide hazards in this district using a Geographic Information System (GIS) framework to integrate various factors contributing to landslide occurrences, such as slope, aspect, geology, vegetation cover, historical landslide data, etc. The methodology adopted for the landslide susceptibility analysis of the region is the collection of topographic data, geological maps, satellite imagery, and historical landslide records related to the study area, followed by landslide susceptibility analysis using GIS to analyze the relationship between various factors and past landslides and to categorize the area based on their susceptibility to landslides as very low, low, moderate, high, and very high by the creation of a map. The resulting landslide hazard map will be a valuable tool for regional planning and disaster risk reduction strategies for the future development planning of the region. It can help authorities identify vulnerable areas, prioritize mitigation efforts, and improve preparedness for future landslide events.
