Slope Stability Analysis Under Varying Soil Conditions

Slope stability analysis for tunnel portal plays a prominent role in ensuring stable slopes and minimizing possibility of catastrophes carried by unstable slopes during subsequent portal excavation. This paper presents a case study of slope constructed along a portal ramp passing through the laterites and weathered rock conditions. Preliminary stability analysis carried out before construction of slopes based on initial investigation results was modified to synchronize with varying soil conditions encountered during excavation along the two-hundred-meter-long slope stretch. Numerical analysis of slope stability was carried out under dry and saturated conditions with and without reinforcements. Factor of safety achieved initially based on investigated hole data was revisited owing to varying soil strata and slope scheme was revised accordingly with flatter bench combinations. The study also deliberated the need for improvising soil reinforcement techniques to take into account soil behavior and heavy rainfall conditions encountered during slope construction of 20 m high slope. Further in order to develop optimum slope stabilization scheme for varying ground conditions, a multifaceted approach was proposed for implementation; use of high strength drilling anchors, explicit drainage requirements, and properly designed slope-toe protection measures. The results of the study underscore the importance of investigation requirements during the construction stage and developing dynamic design approach to take into account varying soil conditions into the existing slope design scheme for effective execution at site level.
