Construction of a 30 m high embankment of Bridge No. 83 between on Nagpur–Chhinwara railway line was completed in May 2013. The toe failure in the 2014 monsoon resulted in 3 to 4 m settlements with wide cracks on the top. Ground heaving by 3 to 4 m had occurred about 50 m from the toe. Repairs of cracks and top leveling were attempted every year, but the excessive settlements continued for next four years. The investigation revealed that the embankment was constructed on a soft clay layer and a seasonal stream was also not diverted. Embankment berms were loaded with boulders with assumption that normal load would increase shear strength of the clay and reduce settlements, but it acted contrary. The rehabilitation was carried out with the help of Gabions in 2019. This paper discusses detailed analysis, causes of failure and all possible methods of rehabilitation such as RCC retaining toe wall, Gabions, and Geocells. The numerical modeling for all the above methods was attempted. Cost comparison, degree of difficulty in execution of a particular rehabilitation process in the light of remoteness of the site, and environmental preferences are also assessed and presented.
