The built environment can play a critical role in addressing the current climate emergency through reducing carbon emissions. While current efforts focus primarily on operational carbon, the growing importance of embodied carbon is becoming increasingly evident. This chapter builds a case for using a Sustainable Value Framework to address embodied carbon within the Australian residential construction sector. The Sustainable Value Framework integrates environmental, social and economic dimensions to propose a holistic view of project outcomes. Through an analysis of three case studies, this chapter demonstrates how sustainable residential projects have successfully reduced embodied carbon by incorporating these interconnected values. The selected case studies provide quantifiable “best practice” data on carbon reduction, energy savings, financial benefits and improved community outcomes. Finally, the chapter provides a roadmap for future research and policy development, aiming to shift the focus from operational to embodied carbon. This shift in focus is seen as helping to ensure a more resilient and sustainable built environment.
