The concept of sustainable urban form remains vague. This chapter attempts to discuss the same and present a case study of sustainability assessment. The objective is not to provide the ‘best’ method of assessment or even come up with case-specific design strategies or policies. A discussion on the dichotomies associated with the concept of sustainable urban form, assessment of its sustainability and relevance of teaching it is the intent of this chapter. The study of the Temple city of Thanjavur in Tamil Nadu, India and assessment of sustainability is presented. The relevance of analysing urban form in relation to the context is discussed. Relevance of teaching urban form and integrating education and policy making is restated.
