On the other side, there are exemplar buildings that prioritise sustainability and push the boundaries of sustainable concepts and building techniques. To upscale this approach and ensure it’s not left to individual building promoters, universal adoption of sustainable building codes is essential. The Uttar Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam (UHBVN) Building in Panchkula, Haryana State, stands as India’s first Super ECBC Building, recognised by the State of Haryana Energy Development Agency. This energy-efficient and resilient building is designed to disseminate principles of architectural design and building services, promoting the widespread adoption of the Energy Conservation Building Code in India. In this way, the Uttar Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam (UHBVN) energy supply utility also serves as a State Designated Agency for promoting energy efficiency. The building is a “walk the talk” project, developed under an Memorandum of Understanding with the Bureau of Energy Efficiency under the Ministry of Power, Government of India, to advance energy efficiency and sustainability measures in local Haryana state buildings. Its design emphasises minimising direct solar access through strategic orientation and functional zoning, and integrates principles of active energy control, energy consumption reduction, and air quality management. The efficient building approach works to mitigate the effects of climate change and showcases a commitment to both sustainability and long-term resilience in face of extreme weather events.
