Climate change has made carbon emission mitigation and adaptation a strategic priority for the government, institutions, cities and corporations. Looking at the magnitude of this challenge, the Ministry of Railways, Government of India, has set an ambitious Net Zero target for carbon emission by the year 2030. The scale of this challenge is magnanimous, looking at the sheer scale of the Indian Railways (IR). The IR have webbed a rail network of 1,23,236 kms covering 8495 railway stations nationwide, running 11,000 daily trains catering to 25 million passengers daily, responsible for India’s 4% of carbon emissions. The case study focuses on Integral Coach Factory, Chennai, a manufacturing plant working towards reaching the goal of ‘Net Zero’ in operational carbon by 2030. The Integral Coach Factory (ICF) plant has been a forerunner in sustainability initiatives, using active strategies towards energy conservation, carrying out carbon sequestering through the plantation of 59,438 trees, biodiversity revival through the revitalisation of the ICF lake and its onsite and offsite energy generation, making it a ‘Net Zero’ energy establishment. The case study further reflects various energy efficiency measures ICF is undertaking in manufacturing and operations. The outcome of the case study demonstrates the mitigation and subsequential extermination of operational carbon, which amounts to 65% of the total carbon emissions. The IR initiatives can reduce 2% of India’s energy consumption and related emissions, a significant step for India and inspire many public sector units towards achieving carbon neutrality.

Climate change has made carbon emission mitigation and adaptation a strategic priority for the government, institutions, cities and corporations. Looking at the magnitude of this challenge, the Ministry of Railways, Government of India, has set an ambitious Net Zero target for carbon emission by the year 2030.
