Climate-Smart Technologies for Maize Cultivation
摘要
Maize is being severely challenged by climate change. Weather patterns have become unpredictable, and the rising temperatures are posing threats to crop yields and the livelihoods of farmers. This chapter provides practical, climate-smart solutions to help farmers adapt and thrive in such changing conditions. Water-saving techniques, such as rainwater harvesting and precision irrigation, and nutrient management practices ensure crops receive the right nutrients at the right time. Conservation tillage and other energy-saving techniques to enhance soil health are also discussed as well as methods for reducing farming costs. It further focuses on the role of stress-tolerant maize varieties and the role of crop insurance and weather-based advisories that can be helpful for farmers to prepare and recover from extreme weather conditions. This chapter provides an action plan, clear and precise, on how to develop resilient maize farming systems that would be able to withstand the forces of a changing climate by marrying local knowledge with modern innovations.
