The genus Zingiber is traditionally categorized into four sections based on the position of the inflorescence: sect. Zingiber (radical, with an erect peduncle), sect. Cryptanthium Horan. (radical, with a procumbent peduncle), sect. Pleuranthesis Benth. (with erect inflorescences emerging from the side of the leafy stem), and sect. Dymczewiczia (Horan.) Benth. (with inflorescences borne apically on the leafy stem). This classification has been supported by studies on the pollen morphology of Zingiber in various regions, which suggest that sect. Zingiber (cerebroid exine sculpturing), sect. Cryptanthium (striate exine sculpturing) while sect. Dymczewiczia should be merged with sect. Zingiber due to their similar pollen characteristics. However, an initial exploratory study on the pollen morphology of seven Zingiber species in Peninsular Malaysia revealed that the pollen morphology not supported the traditional classifications into sect. Zingiber and sect. Cryptanthium, regardless of whether the inflorescence is erect or procumbent. This finding suggested to challenge the previous classification based on inflorescence peduncle habit. Further research is ongoing, with more samples being analysed to include a broader range of Zingiber species found in Peninsular Malaysia.
