Applying an American formalist approach to aesthetic appreciation of Persian carpets, this chapter first offers a cultural-aesthetic analysis of a handful of everyday Persian carpets in rooms in the author’s house. The chapter then cursorily analyzes typical examples of other everyday commercial carpet types. This chapter characterizes the discussed carpets as representations of idealized spring gardens within the realm of art. It then raises the issue of symbolism in traditional carpet designs, using the shrine of Shaykh Safiyoddin (1252/3–1334 CE) in Ardabil and the Ardabil Carpet (1539–1540) as foundations for analyzing a typical modern Tabriz version of the Ardabil Carpet, as well as a typical modern Kāshān carpet, called afshān. Included is a discussion of the ta‘ārof system of polite and deferential verbiage and behavior as paralleling formality and ceremonialness in some Persian carpet designs. The chapter concludes with a brief discussion of eclecticism in Iranian art and culture-specific Iranian aesthetics of decoration and ornament in Persian carpet designs.

摘要
