The Loom of Meaning: Semio-Cultural Essence of Kāshān Carpets
摘要
This chapter examines the semiotics of Kāshān carpets, textiles vividly adorned with botanical and zoological images, each laden with profound cultural implications. Far beyond their aesthetic appeal, the designs establish an intricate semiotic discourse, weaving a tapestry of colors and patterns deeply rooted in tradition and rich with narrative significance. Utilizing the semio-cultural analytical framework by Keshavarz and Noshadi (2023), this chapter explores how these carpets serve as symbols, reflecting and shaping cultural identity through an elaborate pictorial language. An investigation into this pictorial language reveals the historical forces that have molded these emblematic motifs, unveiling an intricate relationship between cultural identity and artistic manifestation. This discussion extends to the role of Kāshān carpets as custodians of historical wisdom and as reflective surfaces capturing and revealing shifts in contemporary cultural preferences and values. Furthermore, this discourse evaluates the methodologies employed to maintain this semiotic legacy, recognizing the essential need for creativity in perpetuating this venerable form of expression. Ultimately, the discourse speculates on the prospective path of Kāshān carpets, contemplating how this elaborate semiotic fabric will continue intertwining with the expansive linguistic and cultural milieuMilieu of Persian society. Through this semio-cultural perspective, the enduring significance of Kāshān carpets as artistic creations and cultural artifacts is profoundly illuminated.
