Sustainable Site Development and Selection Practices in Construction

This chapter explores the critical process of sustainable site development and selection in construction projects. It emphasizes the importance of choosing locations that minimize environmental impact while maximizing social and economic benefits. A holistic perspective is adopted, considering land use, development intensity, social well-being, and environmental preservation to ensure balanced and sustainable growth. By prioritizing brownfield project sites for further development, conservation of biodiversity, proximity to project resources and other critical infrastructure, assessment of climate orientation, and resilience; adhering to regulatory and zoning laws and topographical challenges; conducting environmental impact assessment (EIA); integrating potential renewable energy sources; and actively engaging with communities, sustainable site selection and development can be achieved. By means of adopting sustainable construction site management practices, projects and organizations can reduce pollution, optimize resources, mitigate climate change, and improve overall socioeconomic efficiency. Design principles that incorporate existing site features and waste management practices are highlighted. Overall, the chapter delves into best practices for evaluating potential sites, such as conducting environmental impact assessments, engaging with local communities, and considering long-term sustainability goals. By the end of the chapter, readers will understand the principles and practices necessary to make informed decisions that support sustainable development goals in construction projects.
