The morphology of neutrophils is characterized by a nucleus lobulating into two to five lobes (more lobed nuclei in sheep), usually two to three lobes. Reddish neutrophil granules are present in cytoplasm of neutrophils from domestic animals on HE sections, while coarse eosinophilic granules are present in neutrophils from poultry and rabbits, and hence they are named heterophilic granulocytes. Neutrophils are mostly present in acute inflammation, septic inflammation, and early inflammation.
