Influence of Geocell Basal Reinforcement on Bearing Capacity of Soft Clay
摘要
Soft clay deposits occur in several world nations over a narrow to considerable width along their shorelines. These deposits suffer from high compressibility coupled with low shear strength which makes them unsuitable for construction activity. However, due to large scale economic activity along the coastal zones, these deposits are to be inevitably improved in order to build the required infrastructure. Among the different foundation techniques that are is vogue, Geocell mattress support system is being preferred especially for supporting low to moderate height embankments and light weight structures. In these deposits several studies were carried out by various investigators across the world in order to evaluate the degree of improvement in load carrying capacity and decrease in settlement with Geocell systems. In the present work, an effort is made to study the impact of consistency index of clay bed on the load carrying capacity of the Geocell system placed over the soft clay bed. The testing was carried out on model footings at different initial consistencies of the clay bed. From this study, it is revealed that the bearing capacity of the Geocell system is increasing with increase in the consistency index of clay bed and beyond the consistency index of 0.75 the ultimate bearing capacity of 10–25 t/m2 is obtained. This study revealed that the bearing capacity is increased by 20% when the consistency index is increased from 0 to 1.0, The placement of the geocell further increased the bearing capacity by 30% for different consistencies. The optimum consistency index of clay bed for the maximum benefit from the Geocell system is found to be about 0.5.
