Evaluating the Suitability of Prefabricated Vertical Drains for Soft Ground Modification Near Waddepally Lake, Warangal
摘要
Construction activities in soft soils have been a challenge for engineers due to their highly compressible nature. Prefabricated Vertical Drains (PVDs) are one of the most promising 3-D consolidation techniques used in the field of geotechnical engineering to accelerate the consolidation process in soft soils. In the present study, large-scale consolidation tests (LC tests) were performed on soil samples collected from 3.5 m below ground level at a site near Waddepally Lake in the vicinity of NIT Warangal. Two soil samples, each measuring 45 cm in diameter and 40 cm in height, were placed in a concrete tank for the study. A corrugated polypropylene PVD was inserted into one of the samples for comparative analysis. The results were analyzed in terms of settlement under the same loading conditions and for an equal amount of time, reduction in water content, and an increase in undrained shear strength. The settlement in the sample with PVD was 92 mm, which is 5.75 times higher than the case without PVD, which had a settlement of 16.17 mm under the same time and loading conditions. The water content was reduced to 26% in the case of the PVD sample, which is 1.85 times more than in case I (without PVD). From vane shear tests, it could be concluded that PVDs are 1.65 times more efficient than the case without PVD in improving shear strength under equal time and loading conditions. Based on these observations, PVDs may be one of the best techniques for improving soft ground, as examined in this study.
