Moving water in river and streams is one of the principal agents in eroding bedrock and sediment and in shaping landforms. The rate of riverbank erosion has dramatically accelerated during the last few years. The present study addresses the control of riverbank erosion by the modification of soils in the bank using Lignosulfonate (LS), an organic polymer derived as a byproduct from the paper industry. Rate of erosion of treated and untreated soils were determined using Erosion Function Apparatus (EFA). It was found that LS treatment had profound impact on erodability of treated samples, bringing about significant reduction in coefficient of soil erosion and increase in critical shear stress. Thus treatment using Lignosulfonate can be a sustainable and cost-effective alternative to traditional hard and soft methods for erosion control.
