Dynamic Compaction (DC) is a ground improvement technique in which the ground is densified by repeated lifting and dropping a heavy mass (5–35 t), known as tamper, onto the ground from a certain drop height, usually ranging between 10 and 40 m. The repeated operation is carried out at specified drop locations, usually arranged in a grid fashion. DC is a relatively simple, economical, non-intrusive ground improvement technique with significant improvement depth. The application of DC is not only limited to soils, but it also has been implemented for densifying many types of solid waste deposits, such as construction and demolition waste, coal ash, municipal solid waste, mine spoils and dredged materials. It is vital to utilize solid waste to reduce the land area required for storage, increasing the capacity of storage facilities and to encourage the use of solid wastes for construction purposes. This paper provides a comprehensive review on the applicability of DC to solid waste deposits.
