A Gamified Approach to Enhance Open Education Awareness

Open Education plays an important role in democratizing learning by providing free and equitable access to educational resources. In addition, integrating gamification and interactivity into learning environments promotes increased immersion, making knowledge acquisition more engaging and effective. In order to improve participants’ knowledge and comprehension of Open Education and Open Educational Resources (OER), this paper proposes an approach to introduce the concept of Open Education through the design and the development of a gamified learning environment “OER Discovery” designed as an immersive and interactive platform that includes gamification features to engage users in learning about OER concepts. Utilizing pre- and post-game surveys, the research employs a mixed-methods approach to evaluate participants’ knowledge, engagement, and perceptions both before and after they interact with the gamified environment. The post-game results demonstrate a noteworthy enhancement in the participants’ comprehension ofOER concepts, namely the “5R” principles and the open licenses. This demonstrateshow well the gamified approach explains difficult ideas and advances learning objectives, and contributes to raise awareness regarding open education.
