This chapter clarifies the extent to which the rise of IS influenced the intensification of sectarian conflict by analyzing the tone of reporting in the four major newspapers published in Iraq through quantitative text analysis as well as public opinion survey. Approximately 150,000 articles from major newspapers are analyzed using a “semi-supervised machine learning model” called LSS, positioning the reports that incite sectarian conflict and those that promote national integration through reconciliation on a one-dimensional scale. The results show that there was a tendency for major newspapers to strengthen the tone of reporting that promotes national integration through reconciliation after the rise of the IS. In addition, analysis of survey data reveals that many people began to place greater importance on national integration beyond sectarianism, especially after the rise of IS. Thus, the chapter concludes that after the rise of IS, the tone of newspapers reporting shifted toward conciliatory, thereby facilitating the de-escalation of continued conflict.
