This chapter details the results of public opinion surveys conducted by the author’s research team over the past decade in Iraq, showing that not only the dysfunctional official state apparatus but also non-state actors have similarly lost support and trust. Moreover, it highlights that many people hold great expectations for the role of a non-functional state and simultaneously demonstrate strong Iraqi identity and support for national integration. The chapter assumes that the background to this kind of contradictory perceptions towards the state and nation is the impact of conflicts.
