Stability analysis of an earthen dam is of much importance because its failure may lead to the potential loss of lives and submergence of surrounding area. Stability of earthen dam can be influenced by various factors like soil properties, geometry of dam, and reservoir level. This paper mainly focuses on the effect of geometric parameters of an earthen dam such as top width of dam, width of berm, and side slope on factor of safety of an earthen dam under different conditions, i.e. steady-state and rapid drawdown condition. The soil samples are collected from Shirgaon region, and data is used for comprehensive analysis. The analysis is performed using SEEP/W and SLOPE/W which are sub-program of GeoStudio software. Limit equilibrium method (LEM) such as Bishop and Morgenstern–Price method are widely used to compute the factor of safety for different cases. Factor of safety for both steady-state and rapid drawdown condition is computed. From the study carried out, it is found that an increase in width of berm, top width of dam, and side slope leads to a higher value of factor of safety under both steady-state and rapid drawdown condition. The optimum earthen dam section in given condition is suggested based on the available data.
