Landslide Susceptibility Mapping Using AHP in Dakshina Kannada District, Karnataka, India

Landslides pose a huge risk to the region’s populace due to the loss of lives, property, ecology, and biodiversity of the region; predominantly experienced in hilly terrain, landslides are caused by the significant decrease in the resistance offered by the soil to shearing. The triggering of landslides can be attributed to natural agencies such as heavy rainfall and human intervention, such as construction. Many causative factors are acting independently or in combination to trigger landslides. The objective of this study is to develop a landslide susceptibility map (LSM) for the district of Dakshina Kannada using ArcGIS employing analytical hierarchy process (AHP). Slope, aspect, and curvature of the products derived from the digital elevation model (DEM), lithology, geomorphology, proximity to road, proximity to lineament, drainage density, and stream power index are factors considered to develop the landslide susceptibility map. The area susceptible to landslides in Dakshina Kannada is classified as 6.81% of the area lies in very high probability of landslide, 17.72% area identified in high probability of landslide, 26.41%, 28.13%, and 20.93% of areas susceptible to moderate, low, very low probability of landslides, respectively. Significant areas in Dakshina Kannada district fall in moderate risk to landslides. Development of landslide susceptibility map will be crucial for all the stakeholders involved in incorporating preventive measures and standard operating procedures in zones susceptible to landslides.
