Access to clean drinking water remains a significant concern across the world, especially in rural areas, with the quality of water supplied to residential areas often being questionable. While commercial filters offer a solution, their efficacy and suitability for residential usage are not always guaranteed. Therefore, there is a need to assess the quality of drinking water filtered through commercial filters and to design and develop suitable gravity water filters for residential usage. The study aims to address the above-mentioned concerns. The following methodology is adopted. Firstly, a survey is conducted to compare the commercially available gravity filters based on parameters like cost, quality, and filtration rate. Along with that, a questionnaire survey is conducted to gather user feedback on commercially available gravity water filters, covering source, satisfaction level, performance rating, and maintenance. From this data commercial water purifiers were evaluated, compared, and selected. Water samples were collected and tested before and after filtering through selected commercial water filter media. Critical parameters were identified, based on which specific filter media is designed, built, and tested for suitability. The study provides evidence-based recommendations for improving the effectiveness of gravity water filters in ensuring safe drinking water.
