The study establishes the emission and performance of diesel engines when mixed with biogas. Due to current regulations, the emission levels of newer diesel engines are getting tougher to meet. Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) are planning to phase out diesel engines for new and upcoming vehicles. The challenge remains for truck industry which heavily depends on the diesel engines and are far from electrification. To meet newer and strict regulations, the diesel engines are finding novel techniques to reduce emissions while performance is tried to kept intact. With this study, the diesel engine’s parameters are studied with the help of 1D and 3D tools to evaluate and improve performance of diesel engines when mixed with biogas. The engine parameters studied are the piston’s surface area and valve timings. This helps to study the swirl and tumble ratio which improves performance of the engine. The different bowls of the engine were studied for their impact of the NO emissions. The stepped bowl was found to have better impact compared to re-entrant bowl and slider bowl. Re-entrant bowl had approximately 3.5 times NO emissions compared to stepped bowl. NO2 emissions were similar in all bowl geometries. The introduction of biogas reduced the NOx emissions. There was a significant drop in the power and torque due to this fuel mixture.
