India is a developing nation, and agriculture plays a prominent role in the Indian economy as it contributes about 17% of the total GDP and around 58% of the population gets employment from agriculture. Despite this high dependency on agriculture, only 1/3rd of the cropped area is under-irrigation. The method used for irrigation is very conventional, and technology is also under-utilized. For any country to develop new technology, IoT is very necessary for the agricultural system. Artificial intelligence and IoT are the two most important technologies in this modern world and have created automation in several sectors, including agriculture, especially smart monitoring of irrigation. In this chapter, we focus on a smart monitoring system for irrigation and water level retention that monitors the irrigation system continuously, preventing water waste and the need for constant human attention. This chapter includes an introduction in Sect. 1, smart agriculture is discussed in Sect. 2, and the concept of smart irrigation systems is addressed in Sect. 3. Section 4 comprises smart monitoring for irrigation, tools and technology used, related work done, and a comparative study of methods used, which are covered in Sects. 5, 6 and 7. In Sect. 8, we have mentioned the proposed model. At last, future recommendations, conclusions, and references are covered in Sects. 9 and 10, respectively.

摘要
