A Utility-Based Approach for Adaptation Decisions in Smart Systems

Smart systems are quite complex systems that are made up of different devices, and characterized by a context that changes frequently. Many researchers use the utility functions as an efficient solution to adapt the smart systems to their context. However, the choice of the most suitable utility function for the adaptation decisions is a delicate task, and as far as we know, there are no guidelines to support and assist the designers in the choice of the utility function that best fits the adaptation decision of their smart applications. This paper presents a utility-based decision approach that includes a classification of the most cited utility functions and guidelines to choose the function which is more appropriate for a decision adaptation.
