The research studies attitudes toward selecting a cultural knowledge system conducted among Chinese high school English teachers. The research aims to reveal teachers’ attitudes towards the cultural knowledge system in English textbooks for senior high schools and strengthen the reference base with the addition of materials about Chinese culture. The research focuses on finding answers to several issues: determine the main views on English textbook reform, find out the attitude towards the knowledge system of the national culture of Chinese English language teachers in high school, and determine suggestions for improving pedagogical competence in designing and thinking about constructing a knowledge system in English textbooks. To test teachers’ attitudes toward building a cultural knowledge system, the authors surveyed teachers in 11 schools in Henan Province and conducted in-depth interviews with nine English teachers out of 230 respondents. The research provided several results. First, most English language teachers in senior secondary schools agree with constructing a knowledge system on national culture. Second, they suggest paying attention to a more complete reflection of the knowledge system about Chinese culture, which will increase the effectiveness of teaching national culture. Third, English teachers in senior high schools consider it necessary to systematize knowledge about national culture and improve students’ basic English literacy.
