Experimental Analysis of a Sustainable Water Purifier Using Bamboo Charcoal as an Adsorbent Material

A bamboo charcoal-based water filter offers a sustainable and eco-friendly solution for purifying water by effectively removing impurities, improving taste, and reducing environmental impact compared to conventional filtration methods. The objective of the research work is to develop a small-scale, sustainable water purifier designed to treat raw groundwater, making it safe for drinking. The purifier integrates a multi-stage filtration system, utilizing sand as a pre-filter, followed by sequential layers of bamboo charcoal and ion exchange resin, and a final UV disinfection stage to enhance water quality. The developed system is capable of producing 250 ml of treated water in 60 s. Performance evaluations show a significant reduction in key water quality parameters: turbidity decreased from 200 NTU to 0.02 NTU, hardness reduced from 320 ppm to 140 ppm, and pH adjusted from 10.5 to a neutral 7.01. These results demonstrate that the low-cost, eco-friendly filter effectively improves water quality, making it a viable option for sustainable water purification in resource-limited settings.
