The level of precision of estimates is generally measured by computing the relative standard error (RSE) of the estimates. The RSEs of estimates of aggregates and ratios in the NSS are usually estimated based on the sub-sample-wise estimates of aggregates at the stratum level. If the value of estimated RSE is within 5%, the estimates are considered to be quite robust signifying that the deviation of the true value in the population from the estimate is a maximum of 10% with a very high probability of at least 0.95. Even if the RSE lies between 5 and 10%, the estimates may be considered as fairly reliable in the sense that the true value, i.e., population parameter is not likely to deviate from the estimate by more than 20%. The subsequent portion of the text in this chapter describes how the RSEs are estimated in the NSS and what is the level of precision of some key NSS estimates as per the latest surveys.
