Think! You Still Have a Choice: A Communication Design Intervention on Climate Change Education
摘要
This paper addresses the urgent need for innovative methods in Climate Change Education (CCE) by leveraging the forms of communication design, particularly pop-up books, to engage young minds, here the primary school children. Current literature highlights gaps in effective, interactive and culturally relevant teaching tools. The study aims to develop and test an educational pop-up book to enhance understanding of climate change among young learners. Utilising the ADDIE model, the research involved analysis, design, development and limited implementation stages, engaging class 5–9 students, teachers and parents in Bhopal, India. Findings indicate that the pop-up book, ‘Think! You Still Have a Choice’, significantly increases student engagement and comprehension of climate science. Using sustainable materials, this DIY book promotes environmentalism and offers interactive elements to encourage spatial design, dexterity and co-construction. The study concludes that such interactive tools can transform climate education, emphasising sustainability and practical action. This research contributes to environmental education and communication design by demonstrating how innovative, tactile learning resources can bridge educational gaps, foster environmental stewardship among children and bridge the gap in CCE.
