Many citrus fruits like mandarin orange (Citrus reticulata) and sweet lime (Citrus limetta) are being cultivated in Nagpur, Maharashtra, India. According to recent data published by the National Horticulture Board 2021, orange cultivation in India constitutes a significant portion by contributing approximately 47,53,830 MT annually, representing 13% of global production. Out of which Nagpur district produces approximately 1,400,000 tons annually, representing approximately 3% of the worldwide output. Despite this abundance, farmers face major challenges, including post-harvest losses, rotting due to unpredictable weather conditions and dropping of immature citrus fruits. This leads to substantial financial uncertainty. A report provided by the Times of India says that the Nagpur Orange Growers’ Association of India has estimated losses at 50% compared to last year, i.e., 2023. A pilot study was conducted in citrus growing villages, and a shift was observed from the cultivation of citrus fruits to cash crops like cotton. Preliminary findings indicate that for every 10 tons of citrus, 3 tons are wasted, presenting a tangible opportunity for additional income generation from this citrus waste. Understanding the urgent need to tackle these issues, our research takes an approach by using and creating the value of citrus waste. Moreover, our analysis evaluates the feasibility of existing solutions and methods to achieve a biodegradable material using citrus fruit waste. This research not only seeks new opportunities for farmers but also contributes to a more sustainable future. By incentivizing farmers to use citrus fruits for extra income, this initiative seeks to reduce their financial burdens while supporting environmental care.
